Frequently Asked Questions

What is LiDAR mapping, and how does it work with drones?

LiDAR mapping uses laser pulses to create detailed 3D representations of surfaces and objects. When mounted on a drone like our Matrice 350 RTK, it scans the environment from the air, generating point clouds that penetrate vegetation and capture accurate elevations. This is enhanced by RTK for real-time positioning corrections, making it faster and safer than ground-based methods.

How accurate is drone-based LiDAR mapping?

With our Zenmuse L2 payload, we achieve vertical accuracy of up to 5 cm and horizontal accuracy of 10 cm at 100 meters altitude. The Matrice 350 RTK's built-in RTK module, combined with the Emlid Reach RS+ base station, ensures centimeter-level precision, ideal for surveying and engineering applications.

What are the main applications of LiDAR mapping?

LiDAR excels in topographic surveying, forestry analysis, flood modeling, infrastructure inspections, and environmental monitoring. It's particularly useful for areas with dense foliage where traditional photogrammetry falls short, providing data for volume calculations, change detection, and habitat assessments

Can LiDAR mapping penetrate vegetation?

Yes, LiDAR can penetrate light to moderate vegetation to reach the ground, making it perfect for bare-earth models. Our setups can handle various terrains effectively.

What payloads can the Matrice 350 RTK support besides the Zenmuse L2?

The Matrice 350 RTK has a 2.7 kg payload capacity and supports a wide range of DJI and third-party options, including RGB cameras (like the Zenmuse P1 for photogrammetry), thermal sensors (Zenmuse H20T), multispectral cameras, and even loudspeakers or spotlights. We rent additional payloads as needed to customize services.

Do you need ground control points (GCPs) for accurate LiDAR data?

While RTK provides high accuracy without them, we incorporate GCPs for validation in critical projects to achieve the best results. Our workflows ensure data integrity regardless.

How does weather affect LiDAR mapping operations?

LiDAR performs well in low-light or cloudy conditions, unlike photogrammetry. Our Matrice 350 RTK is weather-resistant, but we avoid high winds or heavy rain for safety. We monitor forecasts to schedule optimally.

Can LiDAR data take the place of a certified boundary survey

No. Boundary surveys and plot plans must be conducted on the ground by a licensed land surveyor. Our work servers to benefit surveyors by taking the heavy lift of ground surface points for them to make use of in creating a plot plan.
